What Important Life Lessons Can We Learn from Fishing?
People enjoy fishing for many reasons. For some, it is an opportunity to relax and unwind either alone or with company. For others, it is a chance to have some fun. And, of course, some fish mostly for sustenance and even cultural reasons. Yuri Kudimov mentions that wide variety of reasons why we fish colors the fishing community and provides us with a lot of different perspectives.
One thing that each type of fisherman has in common is that they are able to learn a lot of important life lessons through the hobby. Here, Yuri Kudimov explores a few of the most crucial life lessons that fishing teaches us.
Patience is a Virtue
Many will attest to the fact that fishing teaches patience naturally. Even on days where the fish are biting, there is often a good amount of waiting and downtime. Waiting for another bite and ensuring that you are prepared when it happens is a virtue. Yuri also maintains that fishing can often teach new fishermen that, sometimes, patience is not immediately rewarded. You may do everything right and not catch a fish or nearly as many as you would have hoped. Taking this in stride and keeping at it is important!
Environmental Awareness is Vital
Fishing is an incredible way to enjoy nature and feel more connected to our surroundings. Being out on the water really provides perspective and allows us to appreciate just how beautiful and alive our natural environment is. Yuri often speaks to how fishing has taught him about the somewhat symbiotic relationship that we have with animals and just how important it is to protect their natural habitats. Often while out on the water, we may see trash, debris, or other unsightly messes that can harm wildlife and detract from the fishing experience. This is why many fishermen will not litter and will often clean up trash that they notice while out on the water.
Early Bird Catches the Worm
Yuri Kudimov learned very early in his fishing journey that preparedness is key. Typically, fishermen who are prepared are the most likely to catch fish. You want to go out on the water with an idea of the area, a plan, the right supplies for the job, and, for many fishing expeditions, to get out there early. This is not unlike our regular lives and goals where we are often rewarded when we are able to give ourselves enough time to set up and have a clear plan. Yuri finds that having at least one contingency is a valuable life lesson that can take us far in so many situations.
The Importance of Perseverance
If you fish enough, there will be some outings that are just a bit disappointing. Maybe the fish weren’t biting, landing was a challenge, or there may even be problems unrelated to fish such as boat issues. Fishing teaches perseverance by encouraging fishermen to power through disappointment in pursuit of their goals. Even if you miss out on catching a big one, experience will tell you that there is always another opportunity. Much like other aspects of our lives, fishing also inspires perseverance through flexibility and ingenuity. For example, if the fish aren’t biting, it may invite you to try a different bait or lure. If nothing changes, finding a new spot may be necessary.
Always Keep Learning
Much like other hobbies/ sports, there is so much to learn about fishing. So much so that most will never even scratch the surface of all of the techniques, strategies, equipment types, etc. that there is out there. Yuri Kudimov finds that fact invigorating and inspiring. The fishing landscape is incredibly diverse, and you can really become immersed in it while getting more active in the fishing community. In our regular lives, it is similarly important to always keep learning in all things that we do. It can be tempting to fall into comfortable patterns, especially if they get results. Still, there is always validity in switching things up, especially if you receive knowledge or insight from those who may have different experiences that you can learn from.
The Power of Solitude and Comradery
Some people prefer to fish alone. Yuri maintains that those who do may find that it is an extremely rewarding experience. Fishing alone can help fishermen learn more about themselves as well as how to trust their own gut, experience, and work in pursuit of their goals. After all, in life, there will be times when we are working on something alone and want to make the best of it with only ourselves to rely on. Fishing in groups is also extremely rewarding in a different way. We learn a lot about comradery and its many forms. Sometimes we enjoy a lot of conversations and motivating one another to catch fish on the water, and other times we may be quieter as we wait. Both of these situations represent comradery within the fishing community, and fishing continues to teach us the benefits and power of working alone and in groups.
